Why We Cap Each Service Area at Three Plumbers

A network that signs everybody has nothing to sell the people who joined first. The arithmetic of why the cap exists, and what it costs us.

Every service area on the network is capped at three plumbers. It is the least commercially obvious decision we have made, so it is worth explaining.

The problem with signing everybody

A lead seller wants as many contractors as possible, because contractors are the customers — the more of them, the more times the same enquiry can be sold. Their incentive points directly against yours.

Our incentive is the opposite. We are not paid until you complete a job and get paid, so a plumber who never receives enough work to bother with is worth nothing to us. Signing thirty plumbers in one town would mean thirty people each getting a job a month and all of them leaving.

What the cap costs us

Turning away sign-ups in a town that is already full is turning away potential revenue. We do it because the alternative is worse: the volume per plumber falls below the point where anyone changes how they run their week, and then nobody renews.

What it means for you

How the matching works

You set your own ZIP and service radius, with a thirty-mile minimum. When an appointment is booked, the address is matched against every verified plumber whose radius covers it, best-rated first, and texted to the closest match. If they pass, it goes to the next.

The thirty-mile minimum is there because below that, in most of the country, the population inside the radius is too small to produce steady work — which is the same reason the cap exists, viewed from the other end.

Booked appointments, not leads

Free to join. No monthly fee, no charge per lead. Pipe Well is paid 50% of the job after your documented materials — and only once the customer has paid you.
